Jarry Needs to Make Hard Court Transition

Jarry is living proof for the likes of Simona Halep and Mikael Ymer that it is possible to come back from a drugs’ suspension and return stronger and fitter.

Having one tournament win before his enforced lay-off, he has collected two already this year, and reached a career high ranking.

His successes, though, have all come on clay, and he has yet to make the transition to become a successful hard court player, although he has not competed in Canada before.

Last week he played in Los Cabos, where he gave a reasonable account of himself, reaching the third round beating first a local Mexican wildcard, and then the Dutchman Gijs Brouwer.

He then took the first set off the top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, before losing the next two.

Atlanta Semi-Finalist Humbert

Humbert has now become the number two ranked French tennis player, with only Adrian Mannarino ahead of him in the standings.

Much of his recent rise can be attributed to his form this year on the Challenger circuit, reaching three finals and winning two of them, although they were both on clay.

On the main tour he is still looking to add to his haul of three career titles, the most recent of which came in 2021 on the grass of Halle.

Highlights this year include reaching the third round of the Australian Open and Indian Wells Masters for the first time in his career, whilst more recently, he got to the semi-finals in Atlanta before losing to the Australian Alexandar Vukic.

He also reached the third round in Washington last week, but withdrew ahead of his match with Grigor Dimitrov after an injury scare.

Jarry v Humbert Prediction and Tip

Although Jarry is the higher ranked player, the surface is a leveller and tips the balance in favour of the Frenchman. Jarry, though, is not a complete novice on hard courts, and he will put up a stiff fight.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Humbert to win: 6/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 5/4
