Badosa Battling Injury Woes
2023 has been somewhat of a humbling season for Spain’s Paula Badosa. The former world number two fell out of the top 30 and now finds herself ranked #33 owing to a lack of big wins.
Of course, this is not her fault, as health problems have compelled her to take things slow.
An abductor injury saw her miss the Australian Open and thereafter, endure a bleak run across the Middle East and Sunshine Doubles. However, Badosa found her groove on clay by reaching consecutive quarterfinals in Charleston, Stuttgart, and Rome.
Just when things were going up again, Paula picked up a stress fracture that saw her miss the French Open and retire in round two of Wimbledon against Marta Kostyuk.
That was a month ago, and hopefully, the 25-year-old has had ample time to recover and get back to her best self. As for her record in the Canadian Open, she has never made it beyond two.

Maia Looking Good
2023 has turned out to be another decent season for Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia. Ranked World No. 13 with a record of 25-14, the 11th seed looks to keep this rhythm going.
As a runner-up in Montreal last season, she also needs to defend a fair number of ranking points. An early slip will almost certainly cost her a slip in the rankings.
Nevertheless, there are reasons to be optimistic about Beatriz’s chances this time too. Over the year, she has delivered some good results – notably reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal (French Open), the quarters in the Italian Open, and round four in Wimbledon.
The season has also seen her beat a few big names like Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina, Elena Rybakina, and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Maia has also fared well in doubles, having won the Madrid Open and taking home the runner-up silverware in Indian Wells.
Maia v Badosa Prediction and Tip
Maia is the odds-on favourite here. That said, Badosa is skilled enough to cause all sorts of problems for her opponent – provided fitness is no longer an issue. Expect an entertaining match.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Maia to win: 3/7
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games: 5/6
