Can Eubanks Add To His Impressive Season?

Winning his maiden ATP tour event in Majorca on July 1st, and then following this performance up with a stunning run to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, Eubank’s grass court season was a great success; and has led him to reach a career high ranking of 29.

He began the hard-court US swing at his hometown event the Atlanta Open; he reached the quarterfinals before succumbing to the eventual runner-up Alexander Vukic.

This week Eubanks competed in singles and doubles at the ATP 500 Citi Open in Washington DC. In the singles he comfortably defeated Sho Shimabukuro to reach the last 16, before he came unstuck in two short sets against Jordan Thompson.

Thomson is a player who has caused Eubanks problems in previous encounters.

Eubanks received automatic entry into the Canadian main draw following Djokovic’s withdrawal.

Coming into this tournament, Eubanks will be looking to repeat his standout performance on hard courts earlier this year, when he reached the quarter finals of the Miami Open. A good run in this event would further cement his seeding for the upcoming US Open.

Monfils Returns to Canada after Ankle Roll Last Year

Multiple injuries and the birth of his daughter have resulted in Monfils playing only a handful of ATP tour events in the last two years.

In this event last year, having not played for three months, the Frenchman secured wins over Pedro Martinez and Maxime Cressy, before sadly rolling his ankle mid-way through a potential comeback against Jack Draper.

In 2023, Monfils began his season at Indian Wells, where he notably crashed out in the first round against Jordan Thomson. The following month he travelled to the Miami Open, where unfortunately a persistent wrist injury flared up causing him to retire injured in the first round.

Having missed his home slam in 2022, Monfils focused on returning to Roland Garros this year. He made an emotional return, and in an exhausting first round encounter, defeated Sebastian Baez under the lights of Court Philippe Chatrier.

Over the last two weeks on the American hard courts, we have seen glimpses of Monfils’s fabulous best. He also made appearances in Atlanta and Washington DC. In those events, Monfils narrowly lost out to Thanasi Kokkinakis and Tallon Griekspoor, but defeated Bjorn Fratangelo and Alexander Bublik.

Beating Bublik, who’s serve is a similar potent weapon to Eubank’s, may have given Monfils the confidence and preparation he needs ahead of this match-up.

Eubanks v Monfils Prediction and Tips

Eubanks will likely be victorious; however, I suspect the score and overall contest may be closer than a quick glance at their individual seasons and rankings would suggest.
