The Astana Open was earlier given the license for one year to organise a tournament as a part of the ATP 250, but it was extended to 2022 as well in which the tournament was included as an ATP 500 competition.

In 2021, it was introduced as a WTA event as well and while it wasn’t held in 2022, the WTA Astana Open returned in 2023.

32 players will make it to the main draw of both, the ATP and WTA events while qualifiers will be held before the start of the first round to decide on the rest of the players. There will also be a doubles draw.

2023 Astana Open Schedule & Dates

The 2023 edition of the WTA Astana Open will kick-start from Monday, February 6 with its first round matches. The tournament will go on till Sunday, February 12 when the women’s singles final will be played.

The women’s singles qualifiers will be held on Saturday and Sunday before the start of the tournament main.

The men’s Astana Open will be hosted in September, with the tournament starting off on Monday, September 25. The main draw for this edition will see 28 players feature in the main draw here and the tournament will go on till Sunday, October 1.

What Happened at the 2022 Nur-Sultan Open?

While the Astana Open was first held on the women’s tour in 2021, it wasn’t continued in 2022.

In 2021, it was Alison van Uytvanck who won the title by defeating Yulia Putintseva in the final after being a set down. She clinched it 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 having started off as the second seeded player in the tournament. Putintseva was the top seed.

Van Uytvanck had earlier defeated Jacqueline Cristian while Putintseva cruised past Rebecca Peterson in the semifinals.

The 2022 edition of the ATP Astana Open was won by Novak Djokovic, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

Seeded fourth in the tournament, Djokovic’s only challenge came in the semifinal when he dropped a set to Daniil Medvedev but the Russian retired before the start of the final set.

Soon-woo Kwon of South Korea won the 2021 edition of the ATP Astana Open as he defeated James Duckworth in the final 7-6 (6), 6-3. Duckworth had earlier taken out the defending champion John Millman in the quarterfinals.

Kwon needed a tough three-setter to get past the second seeded Alexander Bublik while Duckworth dispatched Ilya Ivashka in their respective semifinal to make it an all-unseeded final.
