What Happened at the 2020 ATP Buenos Aires?
Casper Ruud was the surprise winner of the 2020 edition of the Buenos Aires Open after he defeated another shock finalist, the lucky loser Pedro Sousa in the final. He won 6-1, 6-4.
Sousa made it through to the final after the top seeded Schwartzman withdrew from their semifinal while Ruud was a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 winner over Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero in his semifinal.
Italy’s Marco Ceccinato won the 2019 edition of the ATP Buenos Aires by beating local lad Diego Schwartzman in the final. He won 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the title.
Defending champion Dominic Thiem was the top seed in the Argentina Open 2019 but was ousted in the semifinal in a gruelling three setter that saw them play out a tie-breaker in the final set. Cecchinato won 6-4, 6-2 in his last-four match to progress into the final. Other than these three, none of the other five seeded players made it beyond the second round of the 2019 edition.
In 2018, Thiem won his second title at the Argentina Open following the withdrawal of defending champion Alexandr Dolgopolov before the tournament began. Thiem defeated Aljaz Bedene in the final, 6-2, 6-4.
Interestingly, only one of the other seeded players even made it to the quarter-final, Diego Schwartzman who lost to the eventual finalist Bedene in that round. Among the other seeds, none made it to the last-eight stage with Britain’s Kyle Edmund withdrawing from the competition before even playing because of an injury.
Thiem ripped past Gael Monfils while Bedene needed three sets to overcome Federico Delbonis to make it to the title-decider.
The previous time Thiem had won a title at this competition was in 2016.
