What Happened at the 2022 ATP Estoril Open?
In what was his first ever ATP title, Sebastian Baez clinched the 2022 title in Estoril by overcoming Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Baez had earlier knocked out the defending champion Ramos-Vinolas in the semifinal as well.
Unseeded Baez overcame Joao Sousa, Marin Cilic and Richard Gasquet in his run through to the semifinals.
Albert Ramos Vinolas won the 2021 edition of the tournament by overcoming a first set deficit in the final against Cameron Norrie to lift the trophy. It was his third career ATP title.
This was after none of the top four seeded players made it past the quarterfinal stage, with the top seeded Denis Shapovalov losing in the second round to Corentin Moutet.
The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled because of the pandemic.
Stefanos Tsitsipas won the 2019 edition of the Estoril Open, making it his second title win of the season following the Marseille Open victory. He defeated Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in the final in straight sets.
This was after the second seeded Fabio Fognini withdrew from the tournament with an injury, and there were first round ousters for Dusan Lajovic, Alex de Minaur and Pablo Carreno Busta. Gael Monfils and Frances Tiafoe made it as far as the quarterfinal while David Goffin was a semifinalist at this competition.
In 2018 at Estoril, the defending champion Pablo Carreno Busta was defeated in the semifinal by the rising star and the eventual runner-up Frances Tiafoe.
In the end, the tournament was won by the Portuguese Joao Sousa, who defeated the likes of the second seed Kyle Edmund and the Greek No. 1 Stefanos Tsitsipas. The likes of Kevin Anderson, Gilles Muller, Albert Ramos Vinolas, and Robin Haase failed to move past the early rounds.
The final showdown could have very well featured Tiafoe and Tistipas – two of the youngest players on the ATP Tour right now. Both of them have had a phenomenal run over the last couple of seasons and the fans would have certainly enjoyed watching them face each other. However, the final match saw Tiafoe face Sousa wherein, the local favorite won the match 6-4, 6-4.
