What Happened at the 2022 ATP Houston Open?
Reilly Opelka won the 2022 edition of the Houston Open by overcoming fellow American and tall-serving John Isner in the title-decider. He clinched it 6-3, 7-6 (7) to lift the trophy.
It had needed Opelka to overpower Nick Kyrgios in the semifinal while Isner sent Cristian Garin out in three sets. Garin had earlier stunned the second seeded Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals.
The ATP Houston had been cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic.
In 2019, the tournament features several prominent American stars like Steve Johnson, Reilly Opelka, Taylor Fritz, Sam Querrey, and Mackenzie McDonald.
With the exception of Querrey, all of them succumbed in the early rounds. The eighth-seeded Querrey defeated Bjorn Fratangelo, Guillermo García López, and Janko Tipsarević, in straight sets to post one of his better performances of the season. He ultimately fell to Cristian Garin, who won the title.
Then 20-year-old Casper Ruud also made personal history by reaching his first ATP final on the circuit. The Norwegian dispatched Hugo Dellien, Opelka, Marcel Granollers Pujol, and Daniel Galan to reach the final.
While he ultimately fell to Garin 6-7(4), 6-4, 3-6, Ruud has moved on to win seven titles since then and has become a steady part of the top 10 in the ATP Singles Rankings.
