What Happened at the 2022 ATP Japan Open?

The third seeded Taylor Fritz won the 2022 edition of the Japan Open by defeating fellow American 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in the final.

Fritz had a couple of tough matches to kick things off against James Duckworth and Hiroki Moriya, before Nick Kyrgios’ withdrawal gave him a quarterfinal walkover.

He needed another three sets against Denis Shapovalov before carving out a title victory.

Top seeded Casper Ruud fell in the very first round to Jaume Munar, while the second seeded Cameron Norrie withdrew from the tournament before it began.

There was no Japan Open in 2020 and 2021 because of the spread of the coronavirus.

Novak Djokovic, participating for the first time ever at the Japan Open in 2019 and clinched the title by winning five matches in a row in straight sets.

Go Soeda was the only player who managed to win five games in a set off him and that happened in the second round but Lucas Pouille, David Goffin and John Millman were all sent packing very easily.

Millman was the losing finalist but more interestingly, was a qualifier who made it all the way through to the title-decider. As it turned ut he didn’t play a single seeded player in his journey through to the final.

In 2018, after defending champion David Goffin withdrew from the tournament, Daniil Medvedev went on to win the title after beating the two-time winner Kei Nishikori in straight sets in the final. He won 6-2, 6-4 to clinch it.

Earlier, Medvedev, who had entered the tournament as a qualifier, romped past Diego Schwartzman in the first round, beat fellow qualifier Martin Klizan in the second, overcame sixth seeded Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals and then registered a straight-set win over Denis Shapovalov to set up this meeting with Nishikori.

Nishikori had beaten Richard Gasquet in the semi-final.

Top seeded Marin Cilic crashed out in the first round, while second seeded Kevin Anderson won a couple of matches before going down to Gasquet in two tie-breakers.
