What Happened at the 2022 ATP Marrakech?
Unseeded players David Goffin and Alex Molcan made it to the final of the 2022 edition of the Marrakech Open with Goffin winning the title by overcoming a first set deficit.
This was after Goffin defeated Federico Coria and Molcan overcame eighth seeded Laslo Djere in their respective semifinals.
The Marrakech Open wasn’t held in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Benoit Paire won the 2019 edition of the Marrakech Open by beating the defending champion Spaniard Pablo Andujar in the final in straight sets. He won 6-2, 6-3.
Interestingly, all but one of the seeded players including Alexander Zverev were knocked out before the quarterfinal stage and only Gilles Simon managed to make it through to the quarters.
Simon then entered the semifinal but lost to Andujar in straight sets while Paire beat fellow Frenchman wildcard Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to make the title-decider.
In 2018, the tournament was won by the Andujar, who rose through the ranks after starting with a protected ranking. He had a fairly comfortable path to the final, considering that most of the top guns had already succumbed in the early stages.
For instance, the top seed Albert Ramos Vinolas, along with the third seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, fifth seed Robin Haase, and the seventh seed Alexandr Dolgopolov lost in the first round itself. Their early defeats paved way for the underdogs, who eventually moved on to do fairly well at Marrakech.
One of the two semifinals featured the top seeds clash against each other – Richard Gasquet and Kyle Edmund. That tie was won by the Brit, who met Andujar in the final. Eventually, Edmund moved on the lose that tie in straight sets.
