What Happened at the 2022 ATP Munich Open?
Wildcard entrant Holger Rune won his first ever ATP title at the 2022 Munich Open as he benefitted from Botic van de Zandschulp’s retirement from the final just seven games into the match.
Rune, who would later go on to win the Paris Masters title in 2022 and subsequently break into the top 10, had begun the tournament with a win over Jiri Lehecka but then crushed the top seeded Alexander Zverev in the second round.
Easing past Emil Ruusuvuori and Oscar Otte, Rune then lifted the title when van de Zandschulp retired from the title-decider. Earlier van de Zandschulp had stunned the second seeded Casper Ruud in the second round.
Nikoloz Basilashvili was the winner of the 2021 ATP Munich as he overcame local guy Jan-Lennard Struff in the final. He won 6-4, 7-6 (5) to clinch the trophy.
This was after Basilashvili had routed the second seeded Casper Ruud in the semifinal, dropping just three games in that match.
Top seeded Alexander Zverev fell in the quarterfinals to qualifier Ilya Ivashka.
The 2020 edition of the Munich Open was cancelled because of the pandemic.
Cristian Garin won the 2019 title at the Munich Open by beating Matteo Berrettini in the final in a tense three-setter that needed a tie-breaker in the final set. He won 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 to lift the trophy.
Defending champion and top seed Alexander Zverev crashed out in the quarterfinals, losing to Garin, before the winner defeated Marco Cecchinato, the third seed in semifinals. Berrettini crushed Robert Bautista-Agut in the other semifinal to make it to the final.
The 2018 edition of the ATP Munich Open was won by the German No. 1 and the World No. 4 Alexander Zverev. The 21-year-old sailed to a comfortable victory in the final against his compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber. Zverev, who was awarded the top seed for the tournament, successfully defended his title in 2018.
He is now the two-time defending champion in Munich and should he choose to participate in the tournament in 2019, it will be a sight to see if he can repeat that feat for the third time.
Among others, there were Gael Monfils, Roberto Bautista Agut, Diego Schwartzman, Fabio Fognini, Hyeon Chung, and Martin Klizan. The event was highly entertaining, to say the least, but Zverev stole the show all the way from the beginning.
