What Happened at the 2019 ATP Rotterdam Open?

After defending champion Roger Federer opted out of the competition it was left to Gael Monfils to defeat the other top Swiss player, Stan Wawrinka in the final to win the title. He won 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to clinch the title.

Wawrinka made it to the final by beating the top seed Kei Nishikori in the semifinals while Monfils overcame the fifth seeded Daniil Medvedev in the other last-four match.

Both matches went to three sets. Interestingly, second and third seeded Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tsitsipas were knocked out in the first round while Milos Raonic, seeded fourth made it to the second.

In 2018, Swiss maestro Federer made it his third title when he defeated Grigor Dimitrov in the final of the tournament, winning 6-2, 6-2 to level with another legend Arthur Ashe.

Ashe had also won this title three times. In fact, in the entire duration of the week, Federer’s only loss of set came in his quarter-finals against Robin Haase. Federer defeated Ruben Bemelmans, Philipp Kohlschrieber, Haase and Andreas Seppi in the tournament to make it to the final before facing his first seeded player.

Dimitrov, on the other hand, got past Yuichi Sugita, Filip Krajinovic, Andrey Rublev and then won a set against David Goffin in the semi-finals before his opponent withdrew because of an injury.

Other seeded players in the tournament included Alexander Zverev, who lost in the second round, Stan Wawrinka, Lucas Pouille and Gilles Muller who were bundled out in the first and Tomas Berdych who had to withdraw from his quarter-finals because of fitness concerns.
