This event will be played on outdoor clay courts in the city of Cagliari. It will serve as an important event in the build-up to the subsequent clay court season including the coveted French Open.

Having a single year license, this ATP 250 event will add depth to the tournaments held in Italy. It will mark the start of the long-awaited European clay-court tournament swing. Interestingly there was a tournament held in 2020, also by the name of the Sardegna Open, but hosted at the Forte Village in Pula, Italy.

The prize money for this edition is set to be around 157,050 Euros for singles and doubles events combined for the 2021 event.

Much like of the other tournaments during the pandemic, this edition of the tournament will also be only on a one-year license from ATP.

What Happened at the 2020 ATP Sardegna Open?

In 2020 there was a tournament held at the Forte Village, which was also called the Sardegna Open. Laslo Djere won the title in that competition by beating Marco Cecchinato in the final in straight sets.

Djere was an unseeded player while Cecchinato had been given a wild-card to participate in this edition of the tournament. Top seeded Fabio Fognini had earlier withdrawn from this competition after testing positive for Covid-19.
