What Happened at the 2022 ATP Stockholm Open?

Seventh seeded Holger Rune‘s fine run in 2022 continued as he won the Stockholm Open this year with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.

Rune, who would go on to defeat Novak Djokovic in the final of the Paris Masters as well, first upset the second seeded Cameron Norrie in a fighting three-setter in the last eight stage of the tournament.

Another three-set win over Alex de Minaur followed in the semifinals before he upset Tsitsipas in the title-decider. It was Rune’s second ATP title.

Tommy Paul won the 2021 edition of the Stockholm Open by beating Denis Shapovalov in the final. He won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Unseeded in the tournament, Paul overcame Egor Gerasimov in his opener before things became tougher for him. And yet, wins over Taylor Fritz, Andy Murray and Frances Tiafoe were good enough to bring him to the final where he nicked out Shapovalov.

The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Canada’s Denis Shapovalov went on to win the 2019 edition, in turn making it his maiden title victory as he overcame the Serbian Filip Krajinović 6–4, 6–4 in the title-decider.

This was after Shapovalov defeated Japan’s lucky loser Yuichi Sugita and Krajinovic edged out the fifth seeded Pablo Carreno Busta in their respective semifinals.

Juan Martin del Potro, the two-time defending champion of the tournament in 2018 opted out.

The top seeds last year in this tournament were John Isner of the US and Fabio Fognini who is the top seed this year as well. Both these players has their work cut out by the eventual finalists Stefanos Tsitsipas and Ernests Gulbis. Gulbis was a surprise entrant into the finals but he has shown good consistency throughout the tournament.

Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first ATP World Tour title as he took down Ernests Gulbis 6–4, 6–4 in the finals. With this win, he became the first Greek player to win an ATP title.
