The Zhuhai Championships replaced the ATP Shenzhen Open and is typically played in the same week as the Chengdu Open on hard courts.

The event will take place at the Hengqin International Tennis Center in Zhuhai – the same venue that has been hosting three major tournaments over the years – the WTA Elite Trophy, the Zhuhai Challenger and the Zhuhai ITF Women’s Circuit.

It goes without saying that the tennis scene in Zhuhai is wonderful with fans flocking to the stadium for every major tennis tournament.

The ATP Zhuhai Open usually marks the start of the Asian leg of the ATP World Tour that will ultimately culminate with the Shanghai Masters.

Over the years, its predecessor – the Shenzhen Open, has featured many stars like Andy Murray, David Goffin, and Tomas Berdych. With Zhuhai being a premier tourist destination in China, we can expect the organizers to rope in top players for the 2023 edition as well.

2023 ATP Zhuhai Open Schedule & Dates

The main draw of the 2023 ATP Zhuhai will start on Monday, September 18 with the final set to take place on Sunday, September 24. Qualifiers will be held two days prior to the first round matches.

Player List for 2023 ATP Zhuhai Open

The list of participants for the 2023 edition of ATP Zhuhai Open will be updated a few weeks before the event starts.

We can expect the first list of participants – the top seeds – to be out by sometime in June-July. We will update this section accordingly with the same information at the earliest.

In the meantime, here’s the list of players who took part in the 2019 season and were seeded by the organisers, the only previous time this tournament was played.

What Happened at the 2022 Zhuhai Championships?

The 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions of ATP Zhuhai Championships were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Alex de Minaur overcame the odds and some solid players in the draw to win the first ever edition of the Zhuhai Open in 2019. He defeated Adrian Mannarino 7-6, 6-4 to lift the trophy. Earlier, de Minaur had gotten past the second seeded Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinal as well.

Mannarino’s journey to the final saw him overcome the top seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in round two after the Greek withdrew from the tournament in the third set of that match. Both, third seeded Gael Monfils and fourth seeded Borna Coric made it to the quarterfinals.

In the 2018 ATP Shenzhen, the tournament that was replaced by the Zhuhai Championships, Andy Murray started the event as a wildcard along with the likes of David Goffin, Fernando Verdasco, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Borna Coric, and Denis Shapovalov.

Needless to mention, the pool was full of young players, all of whom were eager to make an impression on the ATP Tour.

Despite the presence of these big guns, the event was ultimately won by the young Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka, who defeated the likes of Fernando Verdasco, Shapovalov, Denis Kudla, and Pierre-Hughes Herbert to win the title.

As for Murray, he made it as far as the quarterfinal before losing to Verdasco. Similarly, Coric was defeated in his opening match by Cameron Norrie.
