What Happened at the 2022 WTA Bad Homburg Open?
Caroline Garcia showed early signs of form for the season by winning the Bad Homburg Open in 2022. She defeated Bianca Andreescu in the final, clinching the encounter in a close three-setter, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4.
Garcia, who had earlier overcome Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her opener in three sets, then registered straight-set wins over Kamilla Rakhimova and Sabine Lisicki in the next two rounds.
In the semifinals, Garcia was given a solid fight by the ninth seeded Alize Cornet but she scraped past her fellow Frenchwomen 7-6 (9), 3-6, 7-5 to make it to the title-decider.
In what was the first edition of the Bad Homburg Open in 2021, Germany’s Angelique Kerber registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over Katerina Siniakova to lift the trophy.
This was after the fourth seeded Kerber was stretched to a final set tie-breaker in the semifinal by the top seeded Petra Kvitova while Siniakova stunned the seventh seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo.
The WTA Bad Homburg event in 2020 was going to be the first edition of the WTA Tour, replacing the competition in Istanbul last year. That Istanbul Cup was played on clay though and had seen Petra Martic win the title in 2019.
