The WTA Berlin Open had been previously held between 1896 and 2008 before getting cancelled, but made a comeback in 2021.
The WTA had announced the return of the Berlin Open on the world tour in 2020, after an absence of 11 years. The event was to take place in the third week of June before it got cancelled because of the pandemic
The grass court tournament will take place during the same week as the Birmingham Classic event. The Birmingham Classic is scheduled on the same week, however, the status of the event will be downgraded from ‘Premier’ to the ‘International’ category.
This tournament will instead be designated as the Premier tournament. The return of the event comes amid a major rejig of the grass season by the WTA, which will now see two events take place in Germany in the run-up to Wimbledon. Today it is a part of the WTA 500 series.
The event last took place in 2008, and an interesting consequence of this is that none of the previous winners of the event are still active on the Tour. Just for a point of reference, the last winner of the tournament was Dinara Safina.
However, expect the returning event to make for an integral part of the WTA Tour, not just because it is a WTA 500 tournament, but also since it will make for a good grass court build-up to Wimbledon.

What Happened at the 2022 WTA Berlin Open?
Ons Jabeur, who was the top seed, showed early form on grass, when she lifted the trophy to win the WTA Berlin. She would later go on to make it to the Wimbledon final too.
And for the second year in running, it was Belinda Bencic who came second in the final. This time around it was an injury that threw spanner in the works for Bencic.
Jabeur was leading 6-3, 2-1 when the eighth seeded Bencic retired from the final.
In the previous rounds, Jabeur had come on top against Karolina Muchova, Alycia Parks, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and then Cori Gauff to make it to the final.
In a surprise result, Russian qualifier Liudmilla Samsonova defeated the fifth seeded Belinda Bencic in the final to lift the Berlin Open trophy.
Samsonova had earlier also stunned Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals, and beaten Madison Keys who had been a winner over the top seeded Aryna Sabalenka.
The Berlin Open did not take place in 2020 because of the coronvirus pandemic.
It was last played in 2008, when former Russian player Dinara Safina won the title. She defeated compatriot Elena Dementieva 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the final. Both players have since retired from professional tennis.
