Cori Gauff has been tipped to possess the potential to match some of the greats as a result of her early promise and she has already become one of the players to watch out for a long time to come. Gauff went on to clinch the USTA Clay Court National Under-12 competition, becoming the youngest to do so, and later became the world number one junior’s player as well.
A finalist at the junior US Open, which was also her maiden appearance in a Grand Slam was followed by a title victory at the junior’s French Open in 2018. In the final, she defeated Caty McNally, with whom she would go on to play in a lot of doubles competitions later.
That very year kick-started Gauff’s senior career with matches on the ITF circuit as well, and featured in her first senior’s Grand Slam at the US Open where she got a wildcard for the qualifiers. Gauff lost in her opener to Great Britain’s Heather Watson, who would go on to make it to the main draw.
She won her first qualifying round at the 2019 French Open before stunning the world with her showing at Wimbledon that year. After winning all her qualifiers, Gauff faced Venus Williams in the first round and shocked her in straight sets. She went on to win two more matches before Simona Halep ended her run in the fourth round.
Another third round appearance at the US Open followed before she lost to the top seeded Naomi Osaka, but if one thought she wasn’t quite for some of these top players, that myth was dispelled in the 2020 Australian Open.
After another straight-set win over Venus in the first round, she avenged her defeat to Osaka by crushing her in the third round. Sofia Kenin, the eventual champion finally managed to put an end to her campaign in a hard-fought fourth round match.
