Rafael Nadal v Hugo Dellien Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the world number Nadal and the 72nd-ranked Dellien, who is also seven years his junior.
Interesting Start to the Season for Nadal
After winning the title at the Abu Dhabi exhibition tournament by beating Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tsitsipas, Nadal looked to have gotten off the kind of start at the ATP Cup that made him and his country a frontrunner to win the title. A repeat of Davis Cup looked imminent.
A shock defeat to David Goffin might have complicated matters but Spain was dug out of the hole in that one, before Nadal defeated Alex de Minaur en route their win over Australia in the semifinals. However, for the second time in three matches, Nadal was left struggling against his opponent, only this time it was arch-rival and world number two Novak Djokovic who outclassed him in straight sets to win the ATP Cup for Serbia.
Which is why, on the one hand Nadal will have the confidence going into this opener but at the same time, the Spaniard will also hope he can underline his dominance in the early rounds. Needless to say the air quality will come into the equation as well with the fitness of both players tested to the hilt.
Regular at the Challengers, Dellien
Hugo Dellien is currently at his career-highest ATP ranking of 72nd, and a lot of is as a result of his journey as a Challenger expert. Having moved into this league after last winning a Futures title in 2018, Dellien has since won six Challengers circuit competitions.
Two of these came in 2019 but the one thing to note is all of his 21 titles at the lower levels – Challengers and Futures – have come on clay. That is quite something, and it stems from how little hard court tennis Dellien has played all his career. In fact all circuit matches included, Dellien has featured in just five hard court wins in his career.
Which is also why it wouldn’t have come as a surprise when he went down in the first Auckland Open qualifier, to Michael Mmoh. He managed to win just one game in that match, and life’s suddenly going to become way tougher as he takes on the world number one.

You expect first round matches at Grand Slams involving the world number one to be one-sided. This could be in the league of its own though. A straight-set win in which Nadal might not drop more than seven games in the entire match.
