Coming back to the top 5 Grand Slams wins by Roger Federer over his career, here’s our list.

2003 Wimbledon Final

The 2003 Wimbledon Final was a special occasion for Roger Federer as he recorded his first-ever Grand Slam victory. It was also a case of what would come from the Fed in the next 20 years on the ATP tour.

He dominated the 2003 Championships as he dropped just 1 set for the entire tournament as the 4th seed. That dominance continued in the final as he defeated Australian Mark Philippoussis in 3 sets.

He took the first set in a close tiebreak, smashed the Aussie in the second set and sealed the victory with another tiebreaker win.

2009 French Open Final

In 2009, Federer would finally conquer the French Open for the first and only time in his Grand Slam career.

He had lost to the king of the French Open in Rafa Nadal over the previous 3 years so 2009 would’ve given the Fed a lot of satisfaction. Roger faced Robin Söderling in the final and both players were coming off gruelling 5-set victories in the semi-finals. But Federer came out in the final and asserted himself with a 6-1 first-set.

He won the second set in a tiebreak and cruised to a 3-set victory with a 6-4 result in the 3rd.

2007 Wimbledon Final

The 2007 Wimbledon final was an unforgettable and epic 5 set battle between Federer and Nadal, two of the greats of the modern era.

Federer was coming into the 2007 event as the 4-time champion but the pressure of a 5th straight title at Wimbledon didn’t show. He won the first set in a brutal tiebreaker but Nadal fired back in the 2nd set (6-4).

Once again, Federer came through in the 3rd set tiebreaker but Nadal returned serve in a 6-2 fourth set win. In the 5th set, Federer crushed Nadal 6-2 and sealed a record 5th straight Wimbledon title, a record that will be hard to beat.

2017 Australian Open Final

The 2017 Australian Open final between Federer and Nadal will be remembered for a number of reasons. Since Federer has now retired, this final will go down as the last time these two champions would play each other in a Grand Slam final.

Overall, Nadal had a better head-to-head record against Federer in their rivalry but Roger got the better of Nadal on this occasion. The 2017 final was an interesting battle because each set wasn’t really close, which wasn’t usually the case when these two met.

Federer won the first set 6-4 and Nadal took the second 6-3. Then in the 3rd, Federer was all over Nadal with a 6-1 victory but Rafa responded with a 6-3 fourth set. In the 5th, Federer got a few breaks and claimed his fifth Australian Open title with a 6-3 result. He also broke the record as the oldest champion at a Grand Slam since 1972.

Speaking of the Australian Open, here’s an intriguing list of Australia’s Ten Greatest Tennis Players. There have been some great Aussie tennis players over the years and the Australian Open is one of the player’s favourite Grand Slams on the tour mainly due to the beautiful Summer weather, friendly people and laid-back nature of Australia.

2009 Wimbledon Final

After going down to Nadal in a gruelling 2008 Wimbledon final, Federer was back in 2009 to prove his dominance at the Championships and he didn’t disappoint.

He dropped just 1 set coming into the final against American Andy Roddick. Federer would lose the first set of the final, 7-5. However, he responded by winning the following 2 sets in close tiebreakers.

The fourth set went to Roddick 6-3, setting up another 5-set Wimbledon encounter. The two players were desperate for victory as the set would last a total of 30 games – Federer getting the last laugh in a 16-14 result.

The final broke the record for the most games ever in a Grand Slam final and the 5th set was also the longest in the game’s history. This will arguably go down as Federer’s best Grand Slam win.
