What Happened at the 2019 Japan Women’s Open?
Nao Hibino doubled her WTA titles by beating fellow Japanese player Misaki Doi in the final, winning 6-3, 6-2. This was after Hibino had overcome Zarina Diyas in the second round and then stunned the top seed and defending champion Su-Wei Hsieh in the next two rounds to make it to the semifinals. There she needed three sets to get past Mihaela Buzarnescu in the semifinal to set up a title-decider with Doi.
On her part, Doi was a winner over the seventh seeded Sara Sorribes Torno, the seventh seed, in the quarterfinal before toppling the second seeded Veronika Kudermetova in the semifinals.
The 2018 tournament was won by Hsieh, who defeated the American teen prodigy Amanda Anisimova in the final in straight sets. Hsieh, who is a prominent doubles player, ended her titles draught on the singles circuit by lifting her maiden such title in over six years.
The Taiwan-born player had a fairly easy path to the final, which saw her overcome the likes of Polona Hercog, Mandy Minella, Ajla Tomljanovic, and Qiang Wang. As for Anisimova, it was right here in this tournament that she truly rose to prominence, dispatching some big names like Jana Fett, Saisai Zheng, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, and the top seed Shuai Zhang.
What makes her run particularly exciting is that she started as a qualifier and reached her maiden singles final on the tour, at the age of 17.
