The previous title at the Nanchang Open was won by Swedish player Rebecca Peterson who defeated Elena Rybakina in the final to clinch her first ever WTA win. She won 6-2, 6-0 in a one-sided title-decider, making it her first ever WTA title victory.
Top seeded Zhang Shuai retired from her second round match against fellow Chinese player Zhu Lin while the second seeded Wang Yafan made a first round exit at the hands of Nina Stojanovic. Stojanovic made it as far as the semifinal.
