This tournament was first played all the way back in 2001 and the likes of Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Maria Sharapova and Justin Henin have all played and won the title at least once.

Played on outdoor hardcourts, it had a prize money of nearly $3 million attached with it, and 56 singles players participate in the competition. The title winner earns 900 points while the prize money for the champion is nearly $600k.

2023 WTA Qatar Open Schedule & Dates

The 2023 Qatar Ladies Open will be played from Monday, February 13, at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, Doha.

While the first round of the competition begins on that day, the qualifiers to be played from February 11. The final will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023.

The exact order of play of the tournament will be revealed at a later date, closer to the start of the Qatar Open.

What Happened at the 2022 WTA Qatar Open?

The 2022 edition of the WTA Doha was won by Iga Swiatek, who defeated Anett Kontaveit in the final. Swiatek routed her opponent 6-2, 6-0 to lift the trophy.

It was the first of six successive WTA titles that Swiatek won in 2022, and it also kick-started a 37-match winning run for the Polish player.

Some of the top players from around the world were involved in this competition in 2021 and Petra Kvitova won the title after defeating the fourth seeded Garbine Muguruza in the final. She won 6-2, 6-1.

Karolina Pliskova, who had won the title the previous year, did not survive any longer than the third round while Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki did manage to make it to the semi-finals.

Kvitova overcame Agnieszka Radwanska, Elina Svitolina, Julia Goerges and Caroline Wozniacki in her four matches before the final to battle-harden herself for the final against Muguruza.

Muguruza won her semi-final when Simona Halep withdrew from the tournament because of an injury. The Spaniard had earlier overcome Caroline Garcia in her quarter-finals.

The other semi-finalist, top seeded Wozniacki lost to Kvitova in three hard-fought sets.
