The Maharashtra Open is set to be played in the first week of February 2020 in Pune, after the Australian Open. This has changed from its previous avatar where it was used as a tune-up tournament for the Australian Open.

It replaced the Chennai Open, as the sole event in India to be a part of the ATP series. The total number of points up for grab are 250.

Since the inception of the original tournament in 1996, this tournament has been called by multiple names including the McDowell Open, Gold Flake Open, Tata Open, Chennai Open, Aircel Chennai Open and now in its present avatar, the Maharashtra Open.

But after the ATP cancelled their contract with the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association owing to sponsorship reasons before the 2018 edition, the lovely city of Pune has now got the chance to host the exciting, star studded event and at TennisWorldLive.com, we will look to cover it for you.

2020 ATP Maharashtra Open Schedule & Dates

The tournament begins on February 3 with the main draw while the qualifiers will be played before that. The tournament will be going till February 9 when the men’s singles final will be played. Last year, the singles main draw consisted of 28 players.

What Happened at the 2019 ATP Pune Open?

Kevin Anderson went on to win the ATP Pune Open title in 2019, beating tall-serving Ivo Karlovic in three tie-breakers in the final. This was after he had sent out the defending champion and the third seeded Gilles Simon in the semifinal.

Interestingly, Simon won the 2018 edition of the Pune Open by defeating Kevin Anderson in the final. He won 7-6, 6-2 to clinch the title after having entered the tournament as an unseeded player. Karlovic had overcome Steve Darcis in the other semifinal.
