Played in the city of Merida, the WTA Abierto Yucatán will be in its first ever edition in 2023 after replacing the Guadalajara Open after the latter was converted into the much bigger WTA 1000 tournament.

The capital of the state of Yucatan, Merida will hope to attract tennis fans as 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams will fight for the title at this competition in 2023.

The tournament will be played at the Yucatán Country Club in Mérida.

Incidentally, the state of Yucatan has hosted a juniors tennis World Cup by the name of the Yucatan World Cup with the likes of Ana Ivanovic, Madison Keys, Caroline Wozniacki, Bianca Andreescu and Sloane Stephens having all played here in the past.

2023 WTA Merida Schedule & Dates

The first ever edition of the Guadalajara Open Akron will kick-start from Monday, February 20 with its first round matches. The qualifiers will be hosted on Saturday and Sunday before round one while the 2023 Merida Open Akron singles final will be hosted on Sunday, February 26.

What Happened at the 2022 Merida Open?

This will be the first ever edition of the Merida Open as a part of the WTA circuit.

There was another WTA tournament played in Guadalajara which was first held in 2019 as a WTA 125 tournament, following which it was upgraded to WTA 250 in 2021.

Veronika Kudermetova had won the competition in 2019, while in 2020 the tournament was cancelled because of the pandemic.

In 2021, Sara Sorribes Tormo overcame Eugenie Bouchard in the final to win the title, while Sloane Stephens defeated Marie Bouzkova to pocket the 2022 title.
