What Happened at the 2018 Mexican Open?
In the 2018 ATP Acapulco, Rafael Nadal was supposed to start as the top seed but withdrew from the competition right before the start. Nonetheless, the tournament had the star factor in the form of Kevin Anderson, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, and Juan Martin Del Potro.
Ultimately, it was the Argentinean who won the tournament after defeating Kevin Anderson in the final in straight sets. It was quite a memorable week for Del Potro, who defeated Thiem in the quarters and Zverev in the semis – in straight sets. That week marked the start of his resurgence and eventually, he moved on to win the Indian Wells.
The women’s half was equally entertaining, with Lesia Tsurenko starting as the defending champion. In what was a brilliant performance by the Ukrainian, she successfully defended her title after defeating Stefanie Vogele in the final.
She is now the two-time defending champion which is an impressive feat in itself. Last year, she edged past the likes of Arina Rodionova, Kristina Mladenovic, and Daria Gavrilova to reach the final. Vogele, on her end, was equally mesmerizing as she dispatched the likes of Tatjana Maria, Maria Sakkari, Sloane Stephens, and Rebecca Peterson.
