Founded in 1980, the upcoming 2023 edition will be the 25th one of the tournament after the tournament was cancelled in 2020 because of the pandemic. It will  be played on an outdoor hard court surface.

There was a break from 1989-2002 when the competition wasn’t conducted. Despite being a low-tier event, the player pool is something that has never been affected. Since its inception, it has been as intense and action-packed as one can expect it to be.

Over the seasons, the likes of Gael Monfils, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Richard Gasquet, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Goffin, Kei Nishikori, Dominic Thiem, Andy Murray, and other top stars have featured in the French city of Metz.

This year too, we can expect the tennis action to continue in the same vein.

Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego won the 2022 Moselle Open with a straight-set win over the seventh seeded Alexander Bublik in the final. Sonego won 7-6 (3), 6-2.

He did not drop a single set in the entire tournament, with victories over Aslan Karatsev, Gilles Simon, Sebastian Korda and the second seeded Hubert Hurkacz helping him through to the final.

Hubert Hurkacz was the winner of the 2021 edition of the Moselle Open after he defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in the final. Hurkacz won 7-6 (2), 6-3 to lift the trophy.

Going into the tournament as the top seed, Hurkacz had a first round bye and did not drop a set en route his wins over Lucas Pouille, Andy Murray, Peter Gojowczyk and Carreno Busta.

The 2020 edition of the Moselle Open had to be cancelled because of the pandemic.

In 2019, Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made it his fourth victory at the Moselle Open when he overcame Ajaz Bedene in the final in three, hard-working sets 6–7(4), 7–6(4), 6–3.

This was after Bedene had sent the defending champion and another Frenchman Gilles Simon packing. Top seeded David Goffin was knocked out in the second round too while Benoit Paire and Lucas Pouille made it to the quarterfinals before losing.

The 2018 Moselle Open in Metz started with a series of early exits from the top-seeded players. Stefanos Tsitsipas lost in the second round itself, while Lucas Pouille and Philipp Kohlschreiber withdrew from the competition.

These early defeats paved way for Gilles Simon, who started as an unseeded player and made his way to the top with some brilliant tennis. He moved past Jiri Vesely, Filip Krajinovic, Gasquet, and Radu Albot to reach the final. On his way, he faced little to no resistance.

In the opposite bracket, Kei Nishikori as the number one seed looked prime to go the distance but he shockingly fell in the semifinal to the German qualifier Matthias Bachinger.

The German eventually made it to the finals but lost to Simon in straight sets. That win marked the second time that Gilles Simon won the title in Metz.
