Typically it is played a couple of weeks before the start of the 2020 season, and tennis fans cannot ask for a better way to kick start the New Year! The line-up features six top male players and two top female players who battled it out over the course of three days to take home an exciting prize.

However, there will be no such tournament played in the lead-up to the 2021 season because of the changes in the tennis calendar because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In many ways, the event is quite similar to the Hopman Cup, except it is not a sanctioned event by the International Tennis Federation.

Players Participating in 2019 Mubadala World Tennis Championships

The tournament, which is played on outdoor hard courts, has been around the block since 2009. However, it wasn’t until 2017 that women were also invited to compete in the tournament. Over the years, the likes of Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, and Novak Djokovic have blessed the event with their presence.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic will return to participate in this year’s Mubadala World Tennis Championships, and he will be joined by Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev. Now, Stefanos Tsitsipas has also joined the fray, already making this as one of the best exhibition tournaments in the world. Other men’s players will be confirmed soon.

However, after winning the Diriyah Cup in December, Medvedev withdrew from the Mubadala World Tennis as a result of the flare-up of an old injury.

The women’s draw was to have Maria Sharapova and Amanda Anisimova playing against each other but Anisimova has opted out because of an injury and Ajla Tomljanovic will take her place.

This year, the following players have confirmed their participation in the competition.

Both Nadal and Djokovic have had phenomenal seasons so far winning two majors apiece. While Djokovic won titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, Nadal was a French Open and US Open winner.

Interestingly, with Daniil Medvedev having had a season to remember, he might prove difficult to beat as well starting out the 2020 season. A tough, three-way battle for the top prize will be amazing to watch.

We will update the complete list of participants as soon as it is released on the official website.
