The first Asian player ever to become the world number one on the WTA Rankings, Japanese Osaka’s brand has grown to unprecedented levels and that has been down to her on and off-court exploits.

At the 2020 Cincinnati Open, Osaka, pained by the death of an African-American man in a police shooting, Osaka withdrew from the semifinal as a mark of protest. That US Open victory was the third of her career, having earlier clinched the 2018 edition of the same tournament and then made it two in two when she won the 2019 Australian Open.

Osaka had shown glimpses of what lay ahead with third round appearances at all the three majors she participated in, in 2016 and the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2018.

It was at the Indian Wells Open that season that Osaka finally broke through the ranks to show what she is capable of.

Entering that tournament as an unseeded player, Osaka stunned Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska in her first two rounds, overcame Sachia Vickery and Maria Sakkari after that before coming through against Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep (her racquet specs here) and Daria Kasatkina to win the title,

It wasn’t just winning that tournament that would have given Osaka the confidence but the manner of her win – defeating all those big-ticket players in the run-up to the final.

The US Open title followed soon after and she began the next season with a bang as she went on to pocket the 2019’s opening Grand Slam with ease.

Osaka’s game is based on her forehand power and aggression from the baseline but her biggest improvement seemed to have come in 2018 when she reduced the number of unforced errors. This change was brought about by her then-coach, Sascha Bajin, who was with her for both those Grand Slam victories, later also winning the WTA Coach of the Year award.
