England v New Zealand Match Winning Odds*

England v New Zealand Prediction and Tip

On papers, England looks the superior of the two. They have a high quality batting lineup, and also a balanced bowling attack. Expect the defending champions to start with a win.

Tips & Odds*:

England v New Zealand Head to Head

England leads the rivalry 45-44. There have been four no results and two ties. One of those ties was in the dramatic 2019 final which England won on boundary countback after the 50 overs and the super over had ended in a tie.

England Is a Well Balanced Side

Jos Buttler-led England will begins its title defence in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Last month, England beat New Zealand 3-1 in a four-match ODI series in England. But the conditions in India will be completely different from what they were at home.

England have an aggressive batting line-up, however, there are concerns about the fitness of Ben Stokes, the test captain, who came out of the ODI retirement to be part of the 2023 World Cup. Stokes, who is playing as a pure batsman in the tournament after suffering a knee injury recently, and may not be risked in the first match as he has a hip issue.

If Stokes, the 2019 player of the final, sits out the opener, Harry Brook will be slotted in in his place. Brook has picked ahead of the experienced opener Jason Roy in the squad.

England will open with Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow. The former was in fantastic form in the recent series against New Zealand, scoring a century and two fifties, while Bairstow, though out of form, has the ability to turn games on his own. Joe Root is the calming influence in the top order and then there are power hitters, including captain Buttler, with the team batting right down to Chris Woakes at no. 9.

England might be a tad concerned about Sam Curran’s bowling form, but he knows the Indian conditions pretty well and may regain form quickly. Mark Wood and Adil Rashid will lead the bowling, while Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali will play a vital role as spinning all rounders in the side.

New Zealand Without Wiliamson

After losing the series to England, New Zealand went to Bangladesh for a three ODI series and then played 2 warm up matches against Pakistan and New Zealand respectively. And they have won four of those five matches with one resulting in no result.

The Kiwis, who were bitterly disappointed with how the final ended four years ago, will be without their skipper Kane Williamson and experienced pacer Tim Southee in the opener.

But while that’s the bad news from the squad, the good news is that Trent Boult will be spearheading the bowling attack. The left-handed pacer had returned to the ODI squad for the England tour last month after a gap of almost a year.

The Kiwi bowing looks sorted with Lockie Ferguson, Mitch Santner and Ish Sodhi in the mix. But man to man, the batting looks weaker when compared to that of England. Devon Conway will have to do the bulk of scoring, with Tom Latham playing the holding role in the middle and Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Philipps playing the key role in the back end. It will be interesting to see if the management picks the finisher in Jimmy Neesham or give Rachin Ravindra a chance to open after his 97 against Pakistan in the warm up game, which helped the Kiwis chase a score of 345 in just 43.4 overs.
