Bouzkova, on the Adventure of a Lifetime
Every tournament has a player who makes it through the ranks in unexpectedly, despite having all the odds stacked against them. In the Canadian Open this season, it has been Marie Bouzkova. Currently ranked as World No. 91, she has delivered the single best result of her career so far. It is also worth noting that she is playing in this event for the first time.
Having spent most of her year in futile attempts to move past the early rounds on the WTA circuit, this semifinal run in Toronto certainly surprised a lot of players and fans. As a qualifier, she first dispatched Leylah Fernandez and then delivered a series of upsets. Her first victim was Sloane Stephens, which she followed with Jelena Ostapenko and Simona Halep.
What’s particularly impressive here is that she won all of these matches in straight sets and against Halep, she got a walkthrough as the Romanian retired in the second set.
This breakthrough run is also backed by her stints on the ITF circuit, where she has had a fairly good time. Bouzkova is also the winner of the 2014 US Open Girls Singles and that experience may have also helped her perform here.
Business as Usual for Williams
If it wasn’t evident enough, Serena Williams is back on the scene in a big, big way. She has already put her first half of the season behind and looks to make amends for it in this leg of the tour.
OF course, her rather slow start wasn’t her fault as she kept battling injuries and illnesses. But that changed in Wimbledon when she reached the final albeit, lost to Halep. Nonetheless, for the 23-time Grand Slam winner, it was all that she needed to reignite her spirit.
Williams has been absolutely brilliant in Toronto, dismantling the likes of Elise Mertens and Ekaterina Alexandrova. Most recently, the number eight seed knocked out Naomi Osaka in a repeat of the US Open final from last year. She defeated the Japanese 6-3, 6-4, in a show of pure dominance and skill.
Williams v Bouzkova Prediction & Tips
On any other day, Williams would have been the overwhelming favourite to win. But in recent years, she has shown a proclivity to fall to young, rising stars. Osaka and a few others have set the precedent to defeat the American giant and Bouzkova may very well join that club. She will need to bring her A-game for this and Serena, on her part, will need to keep her calm and continue to play in the same vein.
