Fabio Fognini v Guido Pella Head to Head

There have been four matches between Fabio Fognini and Guido Pella at all levels, including Challengers and it’s 2-2 at the moment. They first played all the way in 2010 while their most recent encounter came on the clays of the 2017 Munich Open which Pella won in straight sets.

Escape Artist Fognini Looking for an Easier Match

Two matches played, two matches won in five-setters. That’s what Fognini’s record at this Australian Open reads.

And making it even more interesting is both those wins came via final set tie-breakers, leaving Fognini probably spent on a surface that isn’t among his favourite.

The contrast in those two wins couldn’t have been more stark though. Against Reilly Opelka, Fognini was two sets to love down, before rain stopped play and allowed the Italian to come back and win the next three, surviving 35 aces in the process.

In the second round, he led by two sets against Australia’s Jordan Thompson before he blew that lead up. Thompson took it to the final set and then to a tie-breaker before the Italian 12th seed closed out the match to reach the third round – the same stage at which he had lost last Australian Open. Can he go one better this time?

Pella’s Best Showing at the Australian Open

After getting knocked out in the first round at the Australian Open on four of the five times he’s played before this season, and a second round exit on the fifth occasion, this is already Pella’s best Australian Open showing. And while he will be the first to admit he was lucky with the draw, the signs of a solid showing were there at the ATP Cup before this.

After winning two of the four matches he played at the ATP Cup, Pella carved out a straight-set win over John Patrick Smith in the first round here at the Australian Open. And he followed it up with a 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Gregoire Barrere in the second.

Pella has won just one ATP title in his career and that victory came on clay in 2019. However, he did win the Challenger Tour Finals on hard court all the way back in 2012 and will hoping he can somehow channelise the victory in what could be one of the most important matches of his non-clay career.

Fabio Fognini v Guido Pella Predictions & Tips

Interesting to note here, neither player starts out a favourite with bet365 offering 10/11 for a win for either. On paper, Fognini could hold the edge but having played back to back five-setters might work against him. Pella to win for us.
