Dominic Thiem v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

This is the fourth meeting between the two players with the Austrian leading the head-to-head 2-1. While Thiem won both their meetings at the US Open in 2017 and 2018, Fritz pulled one back with a crucial win at the Laver Cup in Geneva last year.

In Search of Slam Glory Thiem Coming Off Unexpected Five-Setter

Dominic Thiem has been a member of the top ten in the ATP rankings since June 2016.

Identified by many as one of the few to take over the mantle from the Big Three, the Austrian number five is a two time French Open finalist and has been earmarked as the obvious successor to Rafa Nadal on the red dirt, especially at the French Open.

Theim has also shown his abilities on the faster hard courts, winning the title at Indian Wells last year, along with the Beijing ATP 500 and being a runner-up indoors at the year-end ATP Finals last year in London.

The Austrian , at 26 years of age is at a point in his career where he definitely needs Grand Slam silverware to prevent himself from becoming  an “also ran”.

After getting off to a strong start against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, Thiem looked to be coasting in his second round match against Aussie world number 140 Alex Bolt, and was up a set and a break.

However, a sudden drop in intensity from Thiem saw the Aussie step on the accelerator and win the second and third sets, with the Austrian missing plenty of break points in the third.

Down two sets to one, Thiem played to potential thereafter and closed out the match 6-1,6-2 in the last two sets, looking strong in the latter stages, yet playing two sets too many at this stage of the tournament.

In a stacked section of the draw, the Austrian will be hoping to be more convincing in the next round, as being a part of the second week will surely mean conserving energy levels.

Fritz Also Coming Off a Round Two Decider

Big serving young American Taylor Fritz has been on the tour for a few years, as he got started at a very early age. Currently, at the age of 22, he is among the top 30 players on the ATP tour.

After a somewhat erratic start to his career on the main tour, Fritz had a strong 2019 where he broke into the top 30 of the rankings, won his first tile at Eastbourne and performed well for Team World at the Laver Cup.

Fritz had a difficult second round opponent in former world number five Kevin Anderson, but came through after two sets down to win a tight five-setter.

He remains one of five Americans in the round of 32 alongside Sam Querrey, Tennys Sandgren, John Isner, and Tommy Paul.

Dominic Thiem v Taylor Fritz Predictions & Tips

This promises to be a tight encounter with both players having solid ground-strokes. While Fritz has the powerful serve, Thiem has the serve in disguise- which can be deceivingly quick.

A lot will depend on how well Fritz starts as Thiem gets better as a match goes on.

The Austrian will be better prepared than he was in his previous round to avoid any complacency and should close out in no more than four sets

Tip: Thiem to win in four sets: 3/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
