Daniil Medvedev v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Medvedev won the only meeting between the two in the second round of Wimbledon last year, coming back from a set down to win in four.

Medvedev Eases Into the Third Round

Stretched by Frances Tiafoe in the first round on Tuesday, World No. 4 Medvedev looked in good touch Thursday as he eased past Spain’s Pedro Martinez Portero in straight sets.

The Russian, who wasn’t happy with his serve in the four-set win over the American in the first round, hit 19 aces against the qualifier on Tuesday, taking the contest 7-5, 6-1, 7-3 in two hours and nine minutes.

The match, which was disrupted by rain in the first set and needed the closure of the Margaret Court Arena roof, saw last year’s U.S. Open finalist hit 40 winners and make just 25 unforced errors against the Spaniard.

Medvedev, who had to be treated for a nosebleed during the second set, broke his opponent six times and looked comfortable throughout the match, except for a moment in the first when Pedro Martinez broke his serve.

Coming off an incredible 2019, which saw him win two Masters title and reach six consecutive finals, Medvedev has looked equally good in 2020, improving his record to 6-1 on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Russian who was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the fourth round in Melbourne last year will be looking to make a deeper run in the tournament this year but faces a tricky third round opponent in local boy Alexei Popyrin. If he does continue his forward march, he will have to deal with a tough fourth round against No. 15 Stan Wawrinka or No. 19 John Isner.

Popyrin Gets Local Crowds Behind Him

A 19-year-old Popyrin got the crowds behind him last year, announcing his arrival to the big stage by playing some enterprising tennis on his way to the third round at Melbourne Park. One year on, he’s back with new vigour and a bit more maturity, proving once again that he is one of the brightest young players in Australia.

Having beaten Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the first round, after the Frenchman retired while he was 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 down; Alexei Popyrin breezed past Jaume Munar of Spain 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the second round on Thursday.

Looking fluent throughout the match, Popyrin hit as many as 51 winners and broke his opponent four times in the match.

The 2017 boys’ singles champion at Roland Garros, Popyrin also reached the third round of the U.S. Open last year, and will prove to be a tough third-round opponent for Medvedev.
