Alexander Zverev v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head
Both players have won two matches apiece in their previous four encounters with Zverev winning the last match at the Paris Masters last season. Before that, Verdasco had taken Zverev down at the 2017 French Open and the 2015 Metz Open.
Zverev Improving with Every Win
After the kind of start Alexander Zverev had to the season, there were question-marks around his chances as the Next Gen star who could snatch a Grand Slam title before any of the others. There were three defeats in a row, and while those came at the hands of tough opponents, one would have expected the German to win at least one or two of those matches against Alex de Minaur, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Denis Shapovalov.
To add to that, Zverev was pitted against Marco Cecchinato in his opening round match. The Italian is a former world number 16 but failed to rise to the occasion and Zverev won it in straight sets, surviving most tough moments with panache. That was followed by another straight-set victory over Egor Gerasimov with Zverev showing signs of having put his serving woes behind him.
Last year, Zverev ended the season with a woeful double-faults record, serving nearly six a match and started this tournament off with four in the Cecchinato win. However, he looked to have improved considerably as he kept those out in the second round win and now takes on Verdasco with a lot more confidence than he might have had at the beginning of the tournament.

Spanish Veteran Verdasco off to a Solid Start
Hard courts aren’t Verdasco’s most preferred surfaces but with four wins and just one defeat on them this year, Verdasco will be feeling confident going into this encounter. More so when he defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in his previous match at this Australian Open, coming back from a set down against the world number 29 to wrap up the victory.
Verdasco’s earlier wins this season came against Evgeny Donskoy, Filip Krajinovic and Pablo Andujar which means this match will see a sudden shift up in the quality of opposition. For a player who entered the season with a 8-9 win-loss record on hard court last year, this could be a stiff one for the Spaniard.
Alexander Zverev v Fernando Verdasco Predictions & Tips
Zverev’s slow return to form should see him live up to his 1/2 favourite billing, but these odds also represent solid value in the very improved German’s chances. While he might be stretched a tad here, looking at Zverev to win it.
