John Isner v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

These two have played each other five times in previous matches and Isner strangely holds a 4-1 advantage over Wawrinka. Wawrinka’s only win over Isner had come in the Japan Open of 2009, a match that he won in straight sets but since then Isner has won them all including at the Diriyah Cup at the start of the season, where he took out the Swiss player 7-6, 7-5.

Isner Took His Time Coming into His Own

It was a shocking start to the season for Isner, who took part in the ATP Cup for USA and lost all three of his singles matches. A loss to Casper Ruud in the ATP Cup was followed by defeats at the hands of Daniil Medvedev and Fabio Fognini.

Isner then went into the Auckland Open with a first round bye and took his time beating Tennys Sandgren before registering a straight-set victory over Kyle Edmund in the quarterfinals. Ugo Humbert sent him out in straight sets in the semifinals. In short, Isner entered the 2020 Australian Open without too much form and having gotten knocked out before the third round over the past three editions of this tournament, things looked bleak for him.

He was stretched by little known Thiago Monteiro to four sets, all of which went into tie-breakers, before easing to the third round by beating Alejandro Tabilo in three sets. Stunningly, none of those three sets went into a tie-breaker, almost a norm with Isner matches.

Wawrinka Taken to Five Sets by Seppi

As we rightly predicted in our Wawrinka-Seppi preview for the second round match there was every chance Seppi could push the Swiss number two and that’s exactly how things went. The match went into five sets before Wawrinka took the fluctuating battle to move to the third round.

Wawrinka had earlier needed a four-setter against Damir Dzumhur in the first round too following on from his semifinal appearance at the Doha Open.

Given his showing so far, Wawrinka might not have a straightforward contest in front of him but what one can also infer is one can never count Wawrinka out. Win or lose, Wawrinka usually pushes his opponent to the distance and more of the same can be expected out of him.

John Isner v Stan Wawrinka Predictions & Tips

On paper, Wawrinka is a favourite at 8/11 but Isner can be expected to push him here. A straight-set win is almost out of question for either, and between a four-setter and a five-setter, the safe money is on a five-setter here.

Tip: Five sets in the match: 9/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
