Due to his relentless tennis and immense returning, the serve is not viewed as Djokovic’s greatest weapon. But so far in Melbourne, he has posted some staggering numbers behind his first serve. He has averaged 15 aces per match in his opening three rounds, and he won 94% of first serve points against Nishioka.
Granted Djokovic is likely to face brave resistance in his path towards an unprecedented 8th title, but it is worth pointing out that his closest challenger Rafael Nadal, the World No.1, did not manufacture a service break in their recent match in the ATP Cup.
The Serbian star has enjoyed a perfect start to year. He is currently riding on a nine-match winning streak which includes six singles match-wins in the ATP Cup two weeks ago.
Schwartzman Pushed Djokovic in Rome Last Year
Diego Schwartzman’s overall return rating puts him in third spot among active players, behind only Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. At 5ft 7in tall, Schwartzman hasn’t let size define him, but rather his tennis which has won him three ATP tour titles.
The diminutive Argentine has never made the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, but he has equaled his career-best appearance at Melbourne Park.
The 27-year-old is synonymous for playing out bruising battles in the earlier rounds of the majors, and that is partly due to his height which does not enable him to earn free points behind his serves. But he has been in tremendous form this week, dispatching in-form South African Lloyd Harris, Davidovich Fokina and Dusan Lajovic all in straight sets.
A meeting against the defending champion Djokovic will certainly be a tall order, but Schwartzman pushed the Serb very close in Rome last year.

Djokovic has been a serving machine in the first week, slamming down at least 15 aces per match. But Schwartzman is an excellent returner and is likely to limit him from winning free points behind his first serve. The Argentine has also taken Djokovic the distance in their last two meetings which makes him good value to win a set here.
