Milos Raonic v Marin Cilic Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between the pair. Cilic has won twice, whereas Raonic has won once. In the 2018 Monte Carlo Masters’ round of 16, Raonic withdrew from the match due to a knee injury.
Raonic Looking Back to Best After an Injury Troubled 2019
After battling through a tough 2019 where Raonic could only play 36 matches due to injuries, the Canadian is showing signs of getting back to his best. This week he has won all of his three matches in straight sets. He has beaten world number 6, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and world number 36, Christian Garin along the way.
Raonic has won close to 90 percent of his first serve points this week and has not faced a breakpoint in two out of the three matches. His latest victim, Tsitsipas, admitted that he felt like “Stupid” and “getting punched in the face” while returning Raonic’s serves. The former world number three, Raonic is a semi-finalist at Melbourne from 2016 and reached the quarter-finals last year.
His first half of the last season was impressive before the trouble started. He also reached the semi-finals at the Indian Wells, Stuttgart, and the fourth round at the Wimbledon. But first, a back injury and then a lumber spine issue meant that he could only play nine matches post-Wimbledon.
Cilic Coming off Two Marathon Victories
Cilic appears for the 12th time at the Australian Open. He was a finalist in 2018 and a semi-finalist a decade ago back in 2010. The Croatian is one of the only four players who has won a Grand Slam tournament apart from the “Big Three” since 2006. He won the 2014 US Open beating Kei Nishikori of Japan. But his performances have steadily declined over the last year or so and this has meant a drop in the rankings as well. Currently, he is 39 in the world, his lowest since October 2013.
He started the season well by winning two out of his three matches at the ATP cup before winning at Kooyong Exhibition. This week in Melbourne, he has had to dig deep to get to the fourth round. He is coming off two back to back five-set matches, first against Frenchman, Benoit Paire, and then against Spaniard, Roberto Bautista-Agut.
The fight and determination will surely give him a lot of confidence, but it would have taken a lot out of the 31-year-old as well.
Milos Raonic v Marin Cilic Predictions & Tips
Even though there isn’t much in terms of the rankings between the two players, Raonic is the favourite. The Canadian is serving as good as he ever has and has been faultless so far in the tournament. Cilic, on the other hand, has had to scrap past in two tough five-setters to get here. The Croatian won’t have enough in the tank to trouble Raonic.
