Dominic Thiem v Alexander Zverev Head to Head
This is the ninth meeting between both players. Thiem leads the head-to-head 6-2.
This is the third time they are meeting at a major, with both previous meetings at the French Open, being won by Thiem.
Their last meeting was at the semi-finals of the ATP Tour Finals last November, which the Austrian won in straight sets.
Thiem Aiming At First Major Final Outside Clay
World number five Dominic Thiem is playing his first major semi-final outside of clay. Branded as the heir to Rafa Nadal’s successes on clay, Thiem has solidified his ability on the hard courts as well, over the last year and a half.
An epic fourth round encounter at the 2018 US Open against Rafa Nadal, was followed by a breakthrough Indian Wells Masters 1000 title last March, where Thiem defeated Roger Federer in the title match.
His hard court heroics were furthered by an ATP 500 title in Beijing and a runner-up at the year-end Tour Finals in London.
The 2020 season did not get off to the best of starts for the Austrian, with an indifferent performance at the inaugural ATP Cup.
Looking to launch a strong Grand Slam campaign, Thiem’s Melbourne journey was off to a rocky start with a five-setter against 140 ranked Aussie Alex Bolt in the second round.
However, the number five seed increased in confidence with convincing victories against Taylor Fritz and Gael Monfils, setting him up for an exciting quarterfinal clash against world number one Rafa Nadal.
Having already had some intense clashes, this promised to be another pulsating battle between both and it did not fall short.
Thiem played some extraordinary tennis to come back from a break down in each of the first two sets and claim both sets in tiebreakers. Despite a Nadal comeback to claim the third, the Austrian kept his nerve in some tight moments to win the fourth in another tiebreak after both players exchanged breaks of serve during the set.
Thiem is looking at his first hard court major final, and plays familiar rival Zverev in the last four.
Zverev Finally Looking To Make A Mark at Majors
22-year-old German Alexander Zverev reached impressive heights very early in his career even before the age of 20. By the end of 2018, he was the winner of three ATP Masters 1000 titles , and ended the year winning the Tour Finals in London and being ranked number three on the tour.
While he had not performed particularly well at the majors yet, plenty was expected from him in 2019.
What transpired was a disappointing season with on and off-court issues, poor form, disappointing results and despite a revival during the latter part of the year, Zverev only had one title all year, an ATP 250.
2020 was off to a similar start for the young German with a disappointing performance at the ATP Cup, where he lost all his singles matches.
However, Zverev has gone from strength to strength here in Melbourne. Although he did not have the most convincing of starts, his form improved as the tournament progressed.
The young German went through his first four rounds without dropping a set and looked in fine form against evergreen Fernando Verdasco and in-form Next Gen Alexander Zverev.
A much anticipated quarter-final clash between him and Stan Wawrinka followed, where Zverev came back after losing the first set 1-6, to win the next three sets with some exemplary serving.
Zverev is in the semi-finals of a major for the first time and will be looking to make his first major final.
