Dominic Thiem v Novak Djokovic Head to Head
This is the 11th meeting between the two players, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head 6-4.
Thiem has won three of their last four meetings, winning their most recent at the ATP Tour Finals in London last November, in a final set tiebreak, in the group stages.
This is their fourth meeting at a major, with all their previous meetings being at the French Open. Thiem leads that 2-1.
Djokovic Aiming For Eighth Aussie Open Title
Defending champion Novak Djokovic has had the perfect January, after a underwhelming end to the 2019 season.
After winning Wimbledon, Djokovic pulled out with an injury during his fourth round US Open encounter, was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai, exited the year end ATP Tour Finals in the group stages and lost out in the race to year world number one to Rafa Nadal.
2020 began with the inaugural ATP Cup, where Djokovic led Team Serbia to the title, winning all his single matches and playing a vital role in the doubles as well.
He carried his form forward to the Australian Open and after a somewhat shaky start, where he lost a set to German Jan-Lennard Struff in the opener, Djokovic moved into cruise control. Winning his next few matches in straight sets, the world number two looked to be getting stronger with each, with all aspects of his game and especially his serve firing on all cylinders.
An inspired quarter-final victory against the in-form resurgent Milos Raonic was a statement by the world number two Djokovic, of the form he was in, and how stopping him here would need a Herculean effort.
The Serb was up against arch-rival Roger Federer in the semi-finals, but with a groin injury, Federer was not at his best, and it did not take too long for a straight set Djokovic win, despite some early hiccups.
Coming into an eighth final in Melbourne with a clean record, the Serb definitely begins as the clear favorite for grand slam number 17.
Can Thiem Win His Maiden Major?
World number five Dominic Thiem is playing his first major final outside of clay. Branded as the heir to Rafa Nadal’s successes on clay, Thiem has solidified his ability on the hard courts as well, over the last year and a half.
An epic fourth round encounter at the 2018 US Open against Rafa Nadal, was followed by a breakthrough Indian Wells Masters 1000 title last March, where Thiem defeated Roger Federer in the title match.
His hard court heroics were furthered by an ATP 500 title in Beijing, and being a runner-up at the year-end Tour Finals in London.
The 2020 season did not get off to the best of starts for the Austrian, with an indifferent performance at the inaugural ATP Cup.
Looking to launch a strong Grand Slam campaign, Thiem’s Melbourne journey was off to a rocky start, with a five-setter against 140 ranked Aussie Alex Bolt in the second round.
However, the number five seed increased in confidence with convincing victories against Taylor Fritz and Gael Monfils, which set him up for an exciting quarterfinal clash against world number one Rafa Nadal.
Having already had some intense clashes, it was another pulsating battle between both, with Thiem playing some extraordinary tennis to come back from a break down in each of the first two sets to win two tiebreakers. He then followed it up with a fourth set tiebreak win.
In his first non-clay major semi-final, Thiem played friend and rival Alexander Zverev, who was in his first grand slam semi-final. The Austrian held off a spirited fight from his young German peer, and after splitting the first two sets, won the third and fourth in tiebreakers to claim victory.
The world number five, Thiem, will be playing his first Australian Open final, and looking to provide the best of challenges to Djokovic.
Dominic Thiem v Novak Djokovic Predictions & Tips
The two players have had some intense contests in recent times. Both their meetings last year were brutal, going the distance, with Thiem claiming the decider.
While the Austrian winning in the semi-finals at Roland Garros came as less of a surprise, coming back to defeat Djokovic at the indoor courts of the O2 area in London was most impressive.
Both players have been in fine form this fortnight and played some excellent tennis.
While Djokovic has been clinical, Thiem has had to spend more time out there, and win some grueling battles, but prevailed nevertheless.
Thiem has already evidenced that he has what it takes to beat Djokovic, but the question remains if he can do it at a major final and that too in Melbourne, Djokovic’s happy hunting ground.
Not ruling the Austrian out, but given the occasion, i.e. an Australian Open final in Melbourne, expect Djokovic to win in four sets.
