Cristian Garin v Federico Delbonis Predictions & Preview

Garin and Delbonis meet in their second round match at the Rio Open after having taken contrasting paths to get to this meeting. While Garin was made to huff and puff by little-known Andrej Martin with the match going into a final set tie-breaker, the 29-year-old Delbonis dropped just six games in his straight-set drubbing of Roberto Carballes Baena in his opener.

Interestingly, these two have faced off three times before this and while all of those encounters came on clay they were held at the lower, Challenger circuit. Garin leads 2-1, with both of his victories having come in the final of those tournaments in 2018.

Garin has obviously taken that step up and he went on to win two ATP titles on clay last year at Houston and Munich while adding to his kitty two weeks ago in Cordoba. He didn’t play at the Argentina Open but is back in his bid to add to his tournament victory collection. Delbonis, on the other hand, is a doughty opponent, even stretching Diego Schwartzman at Buenos Aires last week and while Garin starts off a favourite, it might not be a straightforward encounter.

Thiago Monteiro v Attila Balazs Predictions & Preview

In what will be their first ever meeting, lucky loser Attila Balazs will be up against the 88th-ranked Thiago Monteiro for a place in the last eight at Rio. And Monteiro will take a lot of confidence into this encounter after having stunned the fourth seed and odds-on favourite Guido Pella in his opener.

Monteiro, who had won the Punta del Este Challenger earlier this year then was sent out in the first round at Cordoba but came back strongly with a quarterfinal entry at the Argentina Open. And now, with a win over Pella and an opponent outside the top 100 awaiting him in the second, another last-eight berth looks a near certainty.

Balazs has been a part of the lower circuit, even missing the Australian Open qualifiers to feature in Bangkok and then made it to the second round at Cordoba. He failed to qualify for the Argentina Open and when he was routed by Gianluca Mager in the qualifiers at Rio, it looked like he might have to return back to the lower circuit.

Instead a spot opened up for him as a lucky loser and he came away with a shock win over Pablo Cuevas, and that in straight sets. Expect bit of a fight but Monteiro to come through in straight sets.

Carlos Alcaraz v Federico Coria Predictions & Preview

Carlos Alcaraz has never played Federico Coria before this but then again, he hasn’t played too much tennis anyway. The 16-year-old wild-card entrant is in his third season of competitive tennis and in this period this is only his second ATP tournament.

He had featured at the Barcelona Open last year, losing in his very first qualifier, but this time around he has gone a couple of notches higher. For starters, he is playing in the main draw of his first ever ATP competition, having earlier featured at the Futures and Challenger circuit.

And he has gone to defeat the seventh seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas in what can be termed as one of the biggest upsets in recent times. Alcaraz needed three sets but came through by winning two tie-breakers and sealed off his biggest pay-cheque and his best ever result.

Now the 406th-ranked player takes on the 116th-ranked Coria, who himself won his first match of an ATP main draw this season here. Qualifying for the tournament with a couple of wins, he overturned a first set loss to defeat Corentin Moutet in the opener here.

Coria starts a favourite here and while Alcaraz will be an exciting player to watch, we will go with the bookmakers on this one.

Tip: Coria to win: 4/6 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)

Pedro Martinez v Pablo Andujar Predictions & Preview

59th-ranked Pablo Andujar is 2-0 on head to head against Pedro Martinez, having both matches last year on clay in Challengers but things could go differently here. For one Martinez has done well to make the main draws of four successive tournaments by winning the qualifiers and at each one of them he has won a match in the main draw as well.

Andujar, on the other hand, has had his struggles this season, winning just two of his seven matches, and while he starts off a favourite, this could get a lot closer. Martinez looks to be a tempting option here.

Tip: Martinez to win: 13/8 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
