Cristian Garin v Federico Coria Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between these two players at tour-level, but they have played each at Challenger level with Garin winning in Buenos Aires in 2017 in three sets.

Garin, the King of the Latin Swing

Cristian Garin is a man on mission this February. The Chilean is on course to finish this month as the King of the South American swing if he can capture the Rio Open title for the first time in his career.

Garin is one of the main star attractions in Brazil this week, and he is unbeaten in six clay-court matches in 2020. He captured his third ATP tour title in Cordoba a fortnight ago, defying the form book and the odds to beat home favorite Diego Schwartzman in three sets.

The talented 23-year-old is sitting at a career-high ranking of World No.25 after his exploits in Argentina, and it is hard to digest how he was able to take such huge leaps in the space of 12 months.

In 2019, Garin had scored just one tour-level victory when he arrived to play the Argentina Open. But at the end of the year, he became one of the premier clay-court players on tour, winning 21 out of 29 matches on the surface.

His record on hard-courts is not the greatest by any means, and after a wobbly start to 2020 in Australia, he is now walking on his own two feet in February.

Coria Beat Alcaraz Garfia in Drama-filled Second Round

Federico Coria is the younger brother of Guillermo Coria, the 2004 French Open finalist, but he hasn’t managed to replicate his brother’s success.

Coria, 27, has featured mostly on the Challenger and Futures events in his career. At Challenger level, he won his first and thus far only title at the Savannah Challenger in 2019, and on the Futures circuit he has captured nine titles to date.

Interestingly, like many South American players, Coria is most at home on clay, and the aforementioned title wins all came on the red dirt.

The Argentinean journeyman is making a rare main draw appearance at an ATP tour event and he had to dig deep to end the inspired run of 16-year-old Carlos Alcaraz Garfia of Spain who is making his debut. Coria’s win was filled with drama to the very last. A hawk-eye call seemed to take away his milestone victory momentarily, but he still showed the composure to cross the finish line and pick up only his third win on tour (two of those wins came this week).

Cristian Garin v Federico Coria Predictions & Tips

Garin has developed into one the finest clay-court players in the game and he is making some serious inroads this February. The Chilean is not blessed with extreme firepower, but his court coverage is very impressive. It would be a real shock if he doesn’t win here.

Tip: Garin to win in straight sets: 5/6 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
