Borna Coric v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Coric and Sonego.

Coric Finally Rediscovering Rhythm

The former world number 12 Croat might not still be in the best of form but slowly showing signs of getting some of rhythm. Having begun the year with a solid, stunning victory over Dominic Thiem at the ATP Cup, Coric had then gone on a five-match losing streak.

These defeats included two at the ATP Cup itself, and opening round losses at the Australian Open and Argentina Open apart from one in an exhibition competition in Kooyong. And with clay not really been Coric’s most preferred surfaces, it might not have come as a huge surprise if he exited early in this competition too.

Coric registered a difficult, but straight-set win over Juan Ignacio Londero in his opener before the little-known, 206th-ranked Thiago Seyboth Wild pushed him to a three-setter. 19-year-old Seyboth Wild, who had earlier been involved in a three-set thriller against Alejandro Fokina that threatened to end in a fist-fight, had Coric sweating as well, taking the match to a tie-breaker in the final set.

The Croat came through and will now look to make it to his first semifinal on clay since the 2017 Marrakech Open.

Sonego Upsets Second Seeded Lajovic

Sonego himself was in a major strife coming into this tournament. Coric had at least won a match against the world number three, Thiem; Sonego was on a five-match losing streak without a win under his belt.

Then he needed three sets to get past Leonardo Mayer and not many gave him too much of a chance against Lajovic. However, that’s what the confidence of a win can do as Sonego rallied past the second seeded Dusan Lajovic in his second round.

The Italian won 7-6, 7-6 despite been a break down in each of the two sets, to make it to his maiden quarterfinal at an ATP 500 event. And given how both have played this entire year, Coric might not be too off the mark when he said he would have to do a lot of homework on his opponent before this encounter.

Borna Coric v Lorenzo Sonego Predictions & Tips

Coric starts off a favourite to win this and he is also 4/1 now to lift the Rio Open title. However, we could see a long-drawn battle here that might either go to the third set or see a tough, two-setter.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
