Marin Cilic v Denis Kudla Head to Head
This will be the second time that the pair will be facing each other in a competitive match. Their last meeting was way back in 2015 Wimbledon when the Croat won in four sets.

After a poor 2019 where the Croatian struggled for form and fitness, the 31-year-old has been showing glimpses of his old self this season.
He started the season with a couple of impressive wins in the ATP Cup. That was followed by a strong Australian Open where he reached the round of 16 which included two five-set wins as well. He was equally impressive in the Davis Cup campaign against India as well.
But the season came to an abrupt end just when things were starting to look up for him. Since the resumption, he has looked rusty and off the boil. Cilic’ straight-sets loss in the first round at Cincinnati is proof of that.
But his record at US Open is impressive and he will be hoping that this week acts as a springboard for a strong end to the season.
The Croat is the 2014 winner at the Flushing Meadows and also reached the semi-finals a year later. His game is set up perfectly for these conditions and with a strong start next week, he could be a dark horse to go deep once again.

Just the Second Match for Kudla Since the Season Resumed
Kudla has had a solid season playing at the challengers level. He has won 11 out of the 15 matches in challenger events this season and all of them have been on the hard courts.
The only time when Kudla did play on an ATP event was at the Australian Open where he could not make it past the qualifying stages. So this first-round match at the US Open will in fact be his first main draw match at an ATP Event this year.
Kudla is an aggressive baseliner and can cause Cilic problems on his day. But this is only his second competitive match since the season resumed and it will be interesting to see how ready he will be for the challenge. He did reach the third round at the US Open last year. That is something that he will be looking to take inspiration from.
Marin Cilic v Denis Kudla Prediction & Tip
This is likely to be a one-sided contest. Cilic is slowly getting back to his best whereas Kudla, although with an impressive hardcourt record, neither has the form nor the game at the moment to trouble the Croatian. It should be a comfortable win for Cilic.
