The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the year and is usually held in the third and the fourth week of January every year. Hosted by Melbourne, it has a current prize money of A$50 million, with the winners of the men’s and women’s singles tournament winning A$3.7 million apiece.
The first ever Australian Open tournament was played in 1905 and Novak Djokovic is the current Australian Open champion, a title he won in 2020 by beating Dominic Thiem in the final of the tournament in five sets. In the women’s section of the draw, Sofia Kenin captured her first Grand Slam title by overpowering Garbine Muguruza in the final.
The second Grand Slam of the year is the French Open, held at Roland-Garros in Paris. Considered the most physically demanding Grand Slam of the year, it was first played in 1891 and the total prize money on offer is €28.02 million. The winner of the men’s and women’s title gets €1.8 million each and the tournament is usually played in the last two weeks of May.
Nadal is the current men’s champion after he captured his 13th title in 2020 by beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Teenager Iga Swiatek overcame Sofia Kenin in the final of the women’s singles French Open to win her first ever title.
Wimbledon, or as it is often called, The Championship, is the oldest tennis competition and it began in 1877. Today it has a prize money of £31.6 million with the singles winners taking home £2.2 million apiece. It’s usually played in the first week of July.
Played on grass courts, its current men’s singles winner is Novak Djokovic who came through in a rip-roaring final against Roger Federer in 2019 while Simona Halep won the women’s singles title.
The fourth and the final Grand Slam tournament of the year is the US Open which is played at Flushing Meadows in New York. The US Open was first played in 1881, and its total prize money is US$50.4 million each year. The singles winners get US$3.7 million each.
Dominic Thiem won the 2020 US Open title in what was his first victory while the women’s title was won by Naomi Osaka.
