Leylah Fernandez v Peyton Stearns Head to Head

Stearns and Fernandez have played once at Tour level. The American won in three sets on the clay in Rabat earlier this season.

Can Leylah Pick Up First Win In Montreal?

Sometimes playing on home soil isn’t at all an advantage. The weight of expectation can simply overwhelm you and you end up playing an opponent who completely redlines their game.

This is why some tennis players can produce their best tennis outside the confines of their home surroundings.

In Leylah Fernandez’s case that theory could hold some water. The 20-year-old lost in the first round in her last trip to Montreal two years ago to British player Harriet Dart.

Fernandez was a colossal favorite in that matchup at 1/3 but still ended up losing in straight sets. But that defeat didn’t dampen her spirits as just a few weeks later, Fernandez set up an all-teenager Grand Slam final with Emma Raducaunu at the US Open.

Both players completely lost their way since that match, but there is still plenty of time they can turn the tide. Fernandez picked up a few victories in Washington against some decent opposition before she lost in the round of 16 to Maria Sakkari this past week.

Stearns Beats Frech to Qualify

Peyton Stearns successfully qualified for the National Bank Open where she is set to mark her main draw debut on Tuesday.

Stearns has now compiled a 38-14 record for the season across all levels and is not far off from breaking the world’s Top 50.

Last week, Stearns lost in qualifying at the 500 event in Washington, but still entered the draw as a lucky loser and upset Magdalena Frech in straight sets. Her campaign in DC, however, came to an end against compatriot Jessica Pegula.

Stearns made sure she wouldn’t play the waiting game this week. She won her two matches at the weekend, incidentally, beating Frech for the second time in as many days to qualify for the main draw.

The 21-year-old spent an hour and 27 minutes to get the job done, winning 6-2, 6-4. She converted four of her seven break points in the match and won 64% of her first serves.

Fernandez v Stearns Prediction and Tip

The Stearns forehand is certainly a shot that can cause damage in this matchup. Playing on home soil can be extremely overwhelming with lots of expectation from the fans, and Fernandez has faltered a couple of times before as the big favorite in this tournament. Still, we’re expecting the Canadian to hold a decisive edge, but it should be a toss-up.
