World no. 5 Casper Ruud will be making his third appearance at the Canadian Open.

The third seed was a quarterfinalist in 2021 and lost in the semifinals to Hubert Hurkacz last year. This year, the 24-year-old Norwegian brings a 28-15 season record into the tournament.

A three-time Grand Slam finalist, Ruud featured in three finals this season, all on clay courts. While he won the title in Estoril, he finished runner-up at the French Open and the Swedish Open.

Ruud had a slow start to the season though as a result of which he has a 5-6 record on hard courts.

He failed to win consecutive matches on hard courts this season during a rough start in the first three months. But he has returned to form during a 22-8 run on clay and will look to bring the clay court form to the hard courts in Toronto.

Lehecka Battles Past Nakashima

Jiri Lehecka got his ATP NextGen Finals revenge over Brandon Nakshima as the world no. 36 edged out the world on. 74 in a two hour and 37 minute first round battle on Monday.

Lehecka came back from a break and 3-5 down in the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead. He lost the second after Nakashima got the solitary break of the set to tie the match at one-set apiece.

In the final set, both players remained strong on their serve and the match was eventually decided in the final set tiebreak, which was dominated by Lehecka, who won the match 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).

The 21-year-old, who finished runner-up to Nakashima in the ATP Nextgen Finals last year, is playing at the Canadian Masters for the first time.

He improved to 30-21 across levels this season and is 15-8 on hard courts, having pulled of some of his best performances on the surface. Those included a quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open and a semifinal finish in Doha.

Ruud v Lehecka Prediction and Tip

Ruud has been disappointing on hard courts this season, but he has slowly regained the form that has seen him win 10 ATP titles from 18 finals. He also has a solid record at the Canadian Open. Expect him to win the match and reach the third round of the tournament but it won’t be an easy outing as Lehecka is also playing well and will give the third seed a tough fight.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ruud to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 26.5 games in the match: 5/6
