Their only previous match came at the WTA Melbourne competition early in 2021 and surprisingly, Boulter had edged past Gauff.

With results not going her way in recent times, Gauff had opted to partner up with Brad Gilbert as her coaching advisor on a weekly basis. That proved to be very beneficial almost immediately as Gauff went on to win her first ever WTA title in the USA last week.
Having earned a first round bye, Gauff eased past Hailey Baptiste in the second before routing Belinda Bencic, Liudmilla Samsonova and Maria Sakkari in straight sets to lift the Washington Open trophy.
And she now enters this competition continuing with the same arrangement.
What Gauff will hope is for the same kind of form to continue into a tournament she has done well in in the past. A quarterfinalist here at both, the 2021 and 2022 edition, Gauff will now kick-start the proceedings here with an opening round bye and against a player never ranked in the top 70 before this.

Boulter Eases Past Marino
Boulter might not have been ranked in the top 70 of the WTA charts before the start of this week but a first round win here at the Canadian Open after having started out as a qualifier would have helped her crack it.
In fact, one look at the live rankings tells us that Boulter might have even entered the top 60 following her straight-set thrashing of Rebecca Marino in the opener.
In a match lasting a mere 66 minutes, Boulter was able to grab a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the wildcard entrant Marino to seal her second round berth. This was her second appearance in this tournament and the first time she has won a match here.
Boulter saved all four of the break-points against her and broke her opponent four times to make it through for a victory.
She will now see a sea-change in the quality of the opposition which is bound to test her no end.

Gauff’s new-found confidence should help her cruise in this one. Another straight-set win looks like a likely result.
