Tommy Paul v Francisco Cerundolo Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two and Cerundolo leads 2-1. Rather interestingly, all three of the matches came on grass and went to a third set.

Paul Stretched by Schwartzman

With Diego Schwartzman in the kind of losing form that he is in, Paul was expected to sail through his opening round encounter.

Instead the world number 14 was forced into a third set by his Argentinian opponent, before coming through and making the second round of a tournament he had made a quarterfinal last season.

Paul won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes after having fallen behind a break of serve in the deciding set.

Things looked to be headed in the right direction for Paul who easily won the first set without facing a break-point and even when he did not earn himself a break of serve in the second, he seemed to be doing well on serve.

This was till Schwartzman broke him in the eighth game and then again in the third game of the third set. Paul came back with a break in the very next game and then again in the 10th game to wrap up the win.

He faces another Argentine now but things can be expected to get a lot tougher against this one.

Cerundolo Edges Past Galarneau

It was expected to be a straightforward win for Cerundolo when he took on the local wildcard and 192nd-ranked Alexis Galarneau but it almost turned out to be a nightmare opening.

Again, much like Paul, Cerundolo also looked to have started off in the manner that was expected out of him as he raced through the first set with two quick breaks of serves. It might have been the eighth game of the first set though that would have given Galarneau some hope as he earned himself a couple of break-points there.

While Galarneau didn’t break Cerundolo in that game, he would go on to break back in the sixth game of the second set and then again in the 10th to level the match.

A stunned Cerundolo then lost his serve again, falling 0-3 behind in the encounter but with defeat staring at him, he fought back with two breaks of serves. Serving out to love, Cerundolo managed to come through and seal his maiden win in this tournament.

Can he pull off a second successive victory now?

Paul v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Three previous meetings have led to three three-setters. This is the first time they will be facing off in a hardcourt competition and we will probably see another three-setter as the two tussle it out.
