Holger Rune v Marcos Giron Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Wimbledon where Giron won in straight sets in the first round.

Rune Continues to Excel

It was in April 2022 that Rune had entered his maiden ATP final. It came at the Bavarian Open on clay and Rune was lucky to win the title as his opponent Botic van de Zandschulp retired from the match there.

In the following 16 months, Rune has made a further seven more finals and won three of them. Four of those finals have come in hardcourt competitions and he has won two there, including the Paris Masters late last year which spiralled him into the fans’ eyes.

What needs to be quickly added here is that Rune’s record in outdoor hardcourt competitions isn’t as solid as that indoors. Of the 27 matches he has played on that surface, Rune has won a mere 13 matches of which nine victories have come this year.

There are two ways of looking at this.

One, this isn’t his most favourite surface obviously and he could take some time to get to his best. The other is that he is vastly improved as a player overall and that includes his showing outdoors on hardcourt, making him one of the dark horses here.

Giron Shocks Ruusuvuori

It wasn’t the most straightforward of wins for Giron but he had come into his opener as a 29/10 underdog against Emil Ruusuvuori. And that he still managed to win it in straight sets was a strong result alright for the American.

Giron, who hasn’t won too many main draw matches this season, needed to come through the qualifiers to make the main draw. In the first round, he took more than two hours of court time to edge past Ruusuvuori after squandering away two match-points.

In a match that saw just one break of serve for both players – one that came in the second set – Giron clinched the win 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) to make it to the second round.

This followed Giron’s 6-8 record in hardcourt main draw matches this season which also included a first round loss at the Washington Open last week. Can he now put up a fight here?

Rune v Giron Prediction and Tip

Rune should not have a lot of difficulties getting past Giron and could do that in two sets too.
