Alcaraz Takes to Court after Wimbledon Triumph

While Alcaraz did feature in the Hopman Cup in the third week of July, this will be his first match on the ATP Tour as a Wimbledon champion. And it would be a great feeling especially given that he starts off a favourite here in the absence of Novak Djokovic.

That Alcaraz has had a season to remember will be an understatement of sorts.

He had entered the year on the back of a US Open triumph and a number one ranking and has gone on to grab six titles and a win-loss record of 49-4. Two of them came on grass, three on clay and he won the Indian Wells Masters on hardcourt while reaching the semifinal at the Miami Masters.

If one is wondering whether that implies his game isn’t as strong on hardcourt, no. In fact Alcaraz had a layoff at the start of the season forcing him to miss all the hardcourt tournaments till the end of February and in the very first competition he played on this surface, in Indian Wells, he won the title.

Alcaraz shouldn’t have a lot of worries for starters here.

Shelton Scrapes Past Zapata Miralles

Having entered this tournament on the back of three successive losses, Shelton finally managed to turn the corner with a hard-fought but straight-set win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

These are early days in the career of the highly talented Shelton and despite having made it to the quarterfinal of the 2023 Australian Open, he is still looking to find his feet at the highest level.

And while he did well at the Australian Open this year, Shelton’s season record of 12-20 going into his opening round match wouldn’t have been something he enjoyed.

Which is why the stalling of the losing streak was one obvious goal but secondly, he would also have liked to get into some winning rhythm. A 7-6 (1), 6-4 win over Zapata Miralles in an hour and 32 minutes would have helped.

Shelton was broken three times in the encounter though and that’s something he will be know will make things rather difficult when he takes on the world number one in round two.

Alcaraz v Shelton Prediction and Tip

Quite a straightforward win can be expected here for Alcaraz as he goes for the jugular from the word go.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Alcaraz to win in straight sets: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
